What IOP is, and what it is not
An intensive outpatient program, or IOP, means several hours of therapy a day, a few days a week, while you live at home. Many people step down to it after residential care or PHP. Others start here when their use is less severe and home is safe.
IOP is not a weekly check-in. It should have a written plan, group and individual therapy, and a way to involve family. If the program can’t say what happens when someone relapses, keep looking.
In short
You live at home.
Several sessions a week.
It should be a real plan.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep working during IOP?
Often yes. Many programs run morning or evening groups. Ask for the schedule before you commit.
Is IOP enough on its own?
For some people. If you are in withdrawal or not safe at home, you may need more care first. Ask for a clinical assessment.
How long does IOP last?
It varies by person and program. Ask how progress is judged and who decides when you are done.
Does insurance cover IOP?
Many plans do. Call the number on your card and ask about your copay and any limits.
