What outpatient care is, and what it is not
Standard outpatient care means regular therapy visits, often once or a few times a week, while you live at home. It can be a first step for milder use, or long-term support after more intense care.
It is not the right start for everyone. If someone is at risk in withdrawal, or home isn’t safe, a higher level of care may come first. Medication for alcohol or opioid use disorder can often be managed in outpatient care, so ask about it.
In short
You stay at home.

Usually, since you are not paying for housing and round-the-clock staff. Your cost still depends on your plan.
Can I get medication through outpatient care?
Often yes. FDA-approved medications exist for alcohol and opioid use disorders. Ask whether the program offers them or refers you to a prescriber.
