ASK BEFORE YOU GO
- Do I sleep at a licensed facility?
- Who is on site overnight?
- How do you decide my length of stay?
What residential care is, and what it is not
In residential care, you live at the facility and your days are built around treatment: therapy, groups, medical and psychiatric care, and structure around the clock. It suits people who are not safe at home, have tried outpatient care without success, or need distance from where they use.
It is not a vacation, and a nice room is not a treatment plan. Pools and ocean views tell you nothing about clinical care. Ask about the schedule, who runs the groups, and their licenses.
In short
You live on site.
Care runs day and night.
The plan should be written for you.
Questions to ask a residential program
- Check the license Look up the exact name and address with Florida DCF, and ask what the license covers.
- Ask about the schedule How many hours of therapy are there each week, and how much of it is one to one?
- Ask who is there at night Which staff are on site, and how do they reach a doctor?
- Get length of stay in writing Ask who decides, and what happens if insurance stops paying first.
- Ask about step-down care Where do you go after, and is that place tied to this program?

Frequently asked questions
How long is residential rehab?
Programs commonly offer 30, 60 or 90 days, but length should follow need. NIDA says treatment length depends on the person and their progress. Ask how the program decides.
Is residential care better than outpatient?
Not automatically. It depends on severity, health and how safe home is. A clinical assessment should drive the choice, not a sales call.
Can family visit?
Most programs have rules on visits and phone use. Ask before admission, and ask about family therapy too.
Do I have to travel to Florida for rehab?
No. Many people do well closer to home, where aftercare is easier to keep up. If you are from out of state, ask what support you will have when you go back.
