ASK BEFORE YOU GO

  1. Are you licensed by Florida DCF?
  2. Who is on site overnight?
  3. Which medications do you use?

What detox is, and what it is not

Detox is medical care that gets a person safely through withdrawal. SAMHSA’s guide for clinicians breaks it into three parts: evaluation, stabilization, and getting the person ready to enter treatment. A good program does all three, not only the middle one.

Detox is not treatment on its own. It clears the body, but it does not deal with why someone uses or what happens next week. SAMHSA is plain about this: detox alone is not enough. If a program can’t tell you where you go after, take that as a warning sign.

In short

Detox manages withdrawal.

Detox is not a cure.

Detox is the beginning, not the end.

When to call 911

Withdrawal can be dangerous

  • Seizures can happen, especially with alcohol or benzodiazepines.
  • Severe confusion or hallucinations need immediate care.
  • Fever or an irregular heartbeat is a medical emergency.

Questions to ask a detox program

  3. Ask about medications Which ones do they use for withdrawal, and who decides?
  4. Get costs in writing Ask what your plan pays, what you owe, and what happens if coverage stops.
  5. Ask where you go next Get the plan for after detox before you check in.

Frequently asked questions

How long does detox take?

It depends on the substance, how much and how long someone has used, and their health. MedlinePlus says alcohol withdrawal symptoms often start within 8 hours of the last drink and peak by 24 to 72 hours, though they can last for weeks. Ask the program what it expects for your situation.

Does insurance cover detox?

Many plans do when detox is medically necessary, but it varies. Call the number on your card and ask whether the program is in network and what you will owe. Get the answer in writing if you can.

Can I detox at home?

Not safely for everyone. Stopping alcohol or benzodiazepines suddenly can be dangerous, so talk to a doctor first. If you have seizures, fever, severe confusion, hallucinations or an irregular heartbeat, call 911.

Is detox the same as rehab?

No. Detox gets you through withdrawal. Rehab is the treatment that comes after it, such as residential care or an outpatient program.
